Hourly to Salary Formula Explained

Hourly-to-salary estimates depend on the work schedule you provide, especially hours and paid weeks. Understand why the popular 2,080-hour rule can be misleading, how unpaid leave changes annual totals, and how to convert accurately.

Easy to Understand

Simple arithmetic formulas explained step-by-step

Schedule Based

Accounts for weekly hours, paid weeks & workdays

Multiple Pay Periods

Monthly, bi-weekly, weekly & daily equivalents

Clear Boundaries

Gross pay focused without hidden assumptions

1

Start with weekly gross pay

Multiply your hourly rate by your normal scheduled hours per week. Then multiply weekly pay by paid weeks per year for annual gross pay.

Use the Hourly to Salary Calculator to apply your own hours, weeks, workdays, and display currency.

weeklyhourly rate × hours per week

annualweekly × weeks per year

2

The 2,080-hour shortcut—and when it is wrong

Multiplying an hourly rate by 2,080 is shorthand for 40 hours per week × 52 paid weeks. It works only when both assumptions match your contract. A 37.5-hour week across 52 paid weeks is 1,950 hours; a 40-hour week across 50 paid weeks is 2,000 hours.

Schedule at $25/hrPaid HoursAnnual Gross
40 × 52 (Full PTO)2,080$52,000
37.5 × 52 (Standard Office)1,950$48,750
40 × 50 (2 Unpaid Weeks)2,000$50,000

Other pay periods

  • Monthly equivalent: Annual gross pay divided by 12 months.
  • Two-week gross pay: Exactly two normal work weeks (weekly pay multiplied by 2).
  • Daily equivalent: Weekly pay divided by workdays per week.

Two-week gross pay is not calculated as annual pay divided by 26 when your weeks-per-year value differs from 52. The label deliberately avoids the ambiguous term “biweekly average.”

4

Gross pay, take-home pay, and overtime

Gross pay is earnings before tax and other deductions. Take-home pay is what remains after income taxes, Social Security/Medicare, healthcare contributions, and retirement deductions, so it cannot be derived from the hourly rate alone.

The calculator also excludes overtime premiums, employer benefits, and paid-leave rules. Currency changes formatting only; no live exchange rate is applied.

Employment rules vary by jurisdiction. For example, the U.S. Department of Labor overtime fact sheet applies to U.S. federal law; it is not a worldwide rule. See the site disclaimer.

5

Convert annual salary back to hourly pay

Divide annual gross salary by total scheduled paid hours in your year. Do not default to 2,080 unless 40 hours and 52 paid weeks both apply to your employment contract.

hourly rate = annual gross salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)

Example with unpaid time

At $25/hr, 40 hrs/week, and 50 paid weeks/year:

Weekly gross pay
$1,000.00
Annual gross pay
$50,000.00
Monthly equivalent
$4,166.67
Two-week gross pay
$2,000.00
Daily equivalent (5 days/week)
$200.00

Pro Tip: Always adjust your paid weeks if you receive 52 weeks of paid time off.

Period Conversions

The hourly wage to annual salary formula starts with weekly gross pay, then expresses the same schedule across periods:

Annual
Full year gross pay
Monthly
Annual ÷ 12
Two-week
Weekly × 2
Daily (5 days)
Weekly ÷ Workdays
