Mathematical Formulation of Gratuity

Gratuity calculations follow straightforward percentage proportions based on the chosen tip base:

1. Sales Tax = Subtotal × (Tax Rate % ÷ 100)

2. Pre-Tax Tip Base = Subtotal
After-Tax Tip Base = Subtotal + Sales Tax

3. Tip Amount = Tip Base × (Tip Rate % ÷ 100)

4. Grand Total = Subtotal + Sales Tax + Tip Amount

5. Total Per Person = Grand Total ÷ Number of People

Worked Tip Examples

Example 1: Pre-Tax vs After-Tax on a $100 Bill

  • Subtotal: $100.00
  • Sales Tax (8%): $8.00
  • Tip Rate: 20%
  • Pre-Tax Tip: $100 × 0.20 = $20.00 (Total: $128.00)
  • After-Tax Tip: $108 × 0.20 = $21.60 (Total: $129.60)
  • Difference: $1.60 additional tip on tax.

Example 2: Splitting a $90 Bill Across 3 Diners

  • Subtotal: $90.00
  • Tip (20%): $18.00
  • Grand Total: $108.00
  • Diners: 3 people
  • Bill Share per Person: $90 ÷ 3 = $30.00
  • Tip per Person: $18 ÷ 3 = $6.00
  • Total Due per Person: $36.00

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a tip be calculated before or after sales tax?
There is no universal calculation basis built into Formulexa. Some receipts, businesses or users calculate a tip from the pre-tax subtotal while others use the amount including tax. Select the basis that matches your intended calculation; the result shows the exact base used.
How do shortcut percentage buttons work on this calculator?
The percentage buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) are provided solely as calculation shortcuts for speed and convenience. Formulexa remains mathematically neutral and does not declare any percentage as standard, correct, or mandatory.
How does bill splitting handle fractional cents?
When splitting a bill equally across multiple people, the exact total is divided by the number of diners. In real-world dining, parties typically round up individual contributions to the nearest cent or dollar to cover the entire bill.
What if sales tax is already included in my bill?
If taxes are already incorporated into the menu price (common in jurisdictions with Value Added Tax / VAT), leave the sales tax input blank or at 0% and select the Pre-Tax Subtotal basis.

Sources & Editorial Methodology

Formulexa calculates gratuity using standard decimal percentage formulas. Tipping conventions and customs vary by jurisdiction, cultural norms, and industry standards. This calculator provides neutral mathematical tools and does not prescribe moral or statutory tipping amounts.

Direct answer

Calculate gratuity, tax, total, and an equal bill split

A tip calculator multiplies the selected gratuity rate by either the pre-tax subtotal or the after-tax bill, according to your chosen basis. Formulexa then adds tax and tip to the subtotal and divides the total equally by the party size. It does not recommend a tipping rate or interpret local service-charge customs.

Tip and split-bill formulas

Tax is calculated from the subtotal. Tip uses the selected pre-tax or after-tax basis, and the final amount is divided equally when the party size is greater than one.

Tip = selected basis × tip rate; per person = (subtotal + tax + tip) ÷ party size

Worked example

For a 100 subtotal, 8% tax, and 20% pre-tax tip, tax is 8 and tip is 20. The total is 128; split equally among four people, each share is 32.

How to read the result

The total reflects the exact inputs and basis selected. Equal split means each person pays the same share; it does not account for individual orders, an included service charge, or local tipping expectations.

Included

  • ✓ Custom tip percentage
  • ✓ Optional sales tax
  • ✓ Pre-tax or after-tax tip basis
  • ✓ Equal bill splitting

Not included

  • — Tipping recommendations
  • — Automatic service-charge detection
  • — Unequal itemized splits
  • — Currency conversion

Common mistakes

  • Tipping on the after-tax amount when pre-tax basis was intended.

  • Ignoring a service charge already shown on the receipt.
  • Assuming equal split matches what each person ordered.

Questions people ask

Is tip calculated before or after tax?

Either basis can be used; choose the option that matches how you want the tip calculated.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Add subtotal, tax, and tip, then divide the total by the number of people.

How does tax affect the total?

Tax is added to the subtotal and can also increase the tip when after-tax basis is selected.

How is tip per person calculated?

The total tip is divided equally by party size as part of the equal split.
